About Me

Hello! My name is Jack Gordon and I am one of the candidates for the Waterloo Engineering Society A-Soc President. I am a Software Eng student in my 3A term and have been involved with EngSoc throughout my degree. Below I have highlighted some experiences that have formed my skillset, and my plans if elected to this position. Thank you for your consideration and remember to vote on February 9!

My Experience

  • Current social and events commissioner, overseeing and planning events including: TalEng, BOT party, clay charms & mug, painting Genius Bowl (come to Grad House first floor, March 13th @7pm!!!), and the upcoming ski trip
  • Former Chief Feedback Officer, hosting multiple in-person feedback sessions and collecting over 100 survey responses
  • Active member of the Governing Document Review Committee and Delegate Selection Committee
  • Director of Genius Bowl in S25, individually organizing and running the event for over 50 attendees (claimed by many to be the greatest event of all time)

My Platform

Advocate for Lower Fees

  • Fight on behalf of students to push back against rising co‑op fees, tuition, and mandatory course costs
  • Hold the university accountable for unjustified fee increases and demand transparency in how student money is used
  • Push for fairer financial policies that make an engineering degree accessible to everyone

Explore Relicensing POETS

  • Look into the feasibility of relicensing POETS to serve as a student bar with affordable pricing
  • Create a safe, community‑focused space that brings engineering students together at lower cost than other campus options

Enhance EngSoc’s Online Presence

  • Modernize the website and social media to keep students informed, connected, and engaged
  • Share updates more consistently so members know what the society is doing and how to get involved

Increase Transparency in Decision‑Making

  • Publish clear, organized summaries of decisions made by the exec team, councils, and committees
  • Give students access to information that helps them understand and and take action in the society

Lead with Integrity and Accountability

  • Ensure all operations follow EngSoc’s procedures and bylaws
  • Set a strong example of fairness, professionalism, and respect within all levels of the society

Streamline Internal Processes

  • Shorten turnaround times for volunteer hiring, budgeting, and event approval
  • Improve coordination to help teams run provide successful services easily and efficiently

Empower New Members

  • Offer guidance to new members on attending meetings and drafting motions
  • Build an inclusive culture where everyone feels confident contributing to EngSoc’s work

The duty of the EngSoc president is to represent its members to the school and the engineering community. If elected, I hope to achieve this by engaging more with the society members (all on-term engineering students) to better understand the desires of the student body. I have experience from being the Chief Feedback Officer in S25 in running surveys and collecting thoughts (yes, that was me spamming your inbox), and I hope to take this experience forward to help guide me in this role.

Additionally, I hope to bring more transparency to the role the president plays in the community; I believe that if the society as a whole has more knowledge about the responsibilities of the president, there will be more opportunity for members to reach out for support from the society and put our resources to good use. My main focus in these areas will be around our budget and how the EngSoc fees are put to use, working with the co-op office, and meeting with the university to improve accessibility and support.

If elected, I hope to lead in a way that prioritizes the future by changing the internal structure of the society. In its current state, there are a lot of people who have to dedicate a lot of time and energy into keeping the society running well. We should not have to rely on volunteers putting in this amount of work for our operations, and if elected I will work to make this effort more sustainable in the following ways:

  • Collecting quantitative data about the results we achieve to determine the effectiveness of our work
  • Prioritizing high-impact events
  • Working with commissioners and directors to optimize the work being done
  • Collaborating with the off-term society to ensure easier transitions between terms

My hope is for these changes to create a society that will be easier to work within and that provides a better experience for its members going forward.

Events are among the most recognized and impactful parts of the society, and they’re an area where I have extensive experience. As leader of the society, my goal would be to reconnect our events with their core purpose: supporting the students who take part in them. That support can take many forms: career development, mental wellness, or helping students build lasting social connections, and it’s this sense of purpose that makes each event meaningful. I would guide the society to run events with a sense of purpose behind them, provide more support for our passionate volunteers, and prioritize events which have the greatest impact. As president, I would ensure every event we host has a clear purpose and lasting impact, guiding my team to organize with this intent in mind.
